MS Word: Addresses do not format correctly in a table

Symptom:
If you try to drag an address word field into a table cell, the address does not format correctly. The address appears on only one line with a square box shown between the address lines.
Solution:
Drag the word field into a text box first, then drag the address from the text box into the table cell.
