After applying Windows Updates to a Windows Server 2003 server, the Space Manager database service will not start and may give one of the following symptoms:

1. Selecting 'Start' does precisely nothing
2. On starting the service, the system displays an Out of Memory error
3. On starting the service, the system displays an insufficient memory error
4. On starting the service, the Service Status continuously displays: Start Pending or Starting.

Solution:

Edit the service parameters, changing the setting:
-ch 1228M

to
-ch 1024M

Either restart the service, or if pending and stopping the service gives an error, restart the server.
