Cannot Write To Engine Configuration File - BDE

After editing ODBC details in the BDE and trying to save these changes the BDE came up with the error "Cannot Write To Engine Configuration File" and the changes could not be saved.
The problem is that on this setup there were over 100 ODBC's setup and the BDE cannot cope with this number. Luckily a number were unused now and I was able to delete them. Removing a number of entries and trying to save again solved the problem.
